Life of an Online High School Student

There are many different reasons a student may need to attend an online school, but regardless of the reason, students from around the world are seeking online schools as an alternative way to obtain their high school diploma. As an online middle school and online high school student, your day is structured a lot differently than a student who attends a public or private brick and mortar school. These students are traditionally confined to classrooms for 7-8 hours or longer per day. In the online high school setting, these rules no longer apply.

Many online schools today offer a flexible schedule where students can work at their own pace. Some online schools offer 24/7 access to courses where students can create their own schedule. Many of these schools require half the amount of time per day as traditional middle and high schools. This gives students a lot of freedom when setting their schedule.

Lucas Ryan, who just turned 17, has been working part-time for the past year and schedules his classes around his work schedule. “I usually work during the day and do my classes at night. Sometimes I am working at 2 or 3 in the morning. I wake up, go to work, go to the gym, eat dinner and then start my coursework”. Like Lucas, this is a familiar schedule for many online students.

Stephanie Moore, a 16 yr old model/actress, would not be able to continue her passion without the flexibility of online schools. “It allows me to travel to different gigs. I can adjust my schedule around my shoots. Sometimes I sleep in, take a run and then log into my classes for an hour. I may go grab lunch, have an audition or shoot, and then come back home to work some more.” Stephanie is one of the many ‘A’ students enrolled in an online high school. Online high schools are no longer associated with “bad” kids or failing students. There are all types of kids now enrolled in online middle and high schools. Some enroll due to medical issues, others because of poor schools or teachers. Many parents enroll their children because they realize their kids are just not learning at their public school.

Whatever the reason, online middle and high schools provide the flexibility to cater to students in many different situations. For students like Stephanie, online high schools provide an opportunity for them to fulfill their dreams. For others like Lucas, it allows them to work and earn money for college or bills. In the past, students would have little choice. It was either their public school or spending thousand of dollars on a private school. Nowadays, students and parents have another viable option.
